Call for Entries: 2025 Global Fact-check Competition

YTN and KCMF(Korea Community Media Foundation) are hosting the 2025 Global Fact-check Competition to strengthen global citizens’ ability to respond to disinformation and to foster a global culture of information verification. We encourage active participation from all who are interested in fact-checking.


* YTN: 24-hour news channel in South Korea

* KCMF: Public institutions for media education in South Korea

September 2025


1. Overview

o Title: 2025 Global Fact-check Competition

o Duration: September to December 2025

o Eligibility: Open to individuals or teams aged 18 and above, regardless of nationality.

* Foreign nationals (e.g., international students residing in Korea) are also eligible.

o Submission: Participants are invited to submit a fact-checking report written in either Korean or English. Outstanding entries will be selected for awards.

- Themes: Reports should address fact-checkable claims in the domains of economy, society, or culture.

* They should focus on topics that have public value and are subject to verification based on media-distributed information.

2. Submission Guidelines

o Submission Period: September 2 October 20, 2025

* Results Announcement: November 3, 2025 (via website and individual contact)

o How to Submit: Email the following documents to both addresses below:

  • Completed Fact-check Report

  • Application Form

  • Consent Form for Personal Information Use

* The template is included in the attached document.

3. Evaluation

o Evaluation Period: October 21 31, 2025

o Evaluation Method: A panel of approximately four Korea-based experts from academia and media will evaluate the submissions based on the designated criteria to select the top 6 entries (3 domestic and 3 international).

o Evaluation Criteria: Relevance of the Topic (20), Validity of Methodology (20), Factual Rigor and Completeness (20), Research Ethics (20), Clarity and Public Impact (20)


4. Presentations and Award Ceremony

o Date and Venue: December 12, 2025 / Seoul, South Korea Further details will be provided to the award winners.

o Program: Team presentations, Awards ceremony Simultaneous Korean-English interpretation provided.

o Awards: 6 Winning Entries / Total Prize Pool: Approx. KRW 10 million

5. [Important] Notes and Requirements


o Event Operations

- The schedule and details of the event may be subject to change depending on the circumstances of the organizers.


o Eligibility

- Only adults aged 18 or older (born before August 31, 2007) as of the announcement date (September 1, 2025) are eligible to participate.

- Participation is open to individuals or teams of up to five members. Participants do not need to be affiliated with any school or organization.

- The entry category (Korea / International) must be selected by mutual agreement among team members. However, teams entering in the international category may not include any Korean nationals residing in Korea.


o Fact-check Report

- Participants may freely select topics requiring factual verification within the fields of economy, society, or culture, focusing on content disseminated through various media (broadcast, newspapers, independent media, social media, etc.).

- Reports must be written in Korean or English using the template provided in Attachment 1. Reports written in other languages will not be accepted.

- There is no limit on report length, and visual materials such as images or infographics may be included.

- The use of AI tools is permitted, but the purpose and process must be ethical and transparent. If any copyright or portrait rights issues arising from AI use are discovered, the award may be revoked.


o Submission and Awards

- Each team may submit only one entry.

- Fact-checks that have already been conducted and published by media or fact-checking organizations are not eligible for awards.

- Participants are solely responsible for any copyright or portrait rights disputes related to their submission. If any infringement is found after selection, the award will be revoked.

If using existing materials (e.g., photos, infographics, charts) rather than self-produced content, sources must be clearly cited.

Submissions containing unauthorized use of copyrighted materials without proper permission will be disqualified.

- At least one member of the winning team must attend the award ceremony in Korea on December 12, 2025, and deliver a PowerPoint presentation summarizing their fact-check report.

Additional details regarding submission of presentation materials and ceremony attendance will be provided to the award winners.

- For international winners, travel and accommodation expenses will be provided for up to two team members to attend the ceremony in Korea.

- Domestic winners are not eligible for transportation or accommodation support.

- The award ceremony will be broadcast live online with simultaneous interpretation in Korean and English.

- Winning entries may be published or exhibited for non-commercial purposes on the Community Media Foundation’s website, blog, social media, and printed materials. They may also be used later for publicity or public interest purposes without requiring additional consent from the creators.

- Winning entries may not be submitted to other contests or competitions. Violations will result in cancellation of the award.

- Award details may be adjusted depending on the number and quality of submissions. Awards may not be granted if there are no eligible entries.

- Prize money will be awarded to the designated team representative. All applicable taxes must be borne by the recipient.
